Our society is experiencing a sharp increase in the number of people who have complex chronic diseases. Yet, conventional medicine is more focused on acute care, the diagnosis and treatment of illness and trauma of short duration. It also lacks the methodology and tools for preventing and treating complex, chronic disease. Most physicians are not adequately trained to assess the underlying causes of complex, chronic diseases and to apply strategies such as nutrition, diet and exercise to both treat and prevent illness in their patients.

Enter Functional Medicine which involves understanding the origins, prevention and treatment of complex, chronic disease. Functional Medicine practitioners look “upstream” to consider the complex interactions in the patient’s history, physiology, and lifestyle that can lead to illness. The patient’s unique genetic makeup is considered, along with both internal (mind, body and spirit) and external (physical and social environment) factors that affect total functioning. Functional medicine also integrates the best of “alternative” and “integrative” medicine with a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet and exercise as well as stress-management, supplements, therapeutic diet and detoxification programs. Functional medicine uses the latest diagnostic testing and other diagnostic techniques to uncover imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, and underlying dysfunction.

Functional Medicine is on the forefront of discovering treatments to reverse health conditions once thought incurable — Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis and other autoimmune conditions.
